Lance Armstrong and Cheating....

I was going to write a long post after watching / reading about Lance Armstrong's confession over the last couple of days on the excerpts from OWN but, have decided against it.

I got into following cycling as a sport later than most I think, which in the UK is not all that unusual as the 'sport' has only had a bit of a renaissance from the mid 80's on, over here.  The only reason I became aware of it was because after I came out of the army at the beginning of the 80's I got my first ever job in 'civvie street' at age 25 in a commercial garage as a warranty administrator.  The lead mechanic then, latterly the foreman in the workshop, was a young guy called Ivor Reid, who if I also remember correctly was the resident tachograph expert and therefore had his own little workshop within the garage to work on these 'spies in the cab' as they were then known.   Anyway, Ivor had a cycle roller in his workshop and he used to build up a bit of sweat on that thing during his lunch break and this of course got us talking and ergo my introduction to cycling as a sport and The Tour De France, which had been going for over 80 years by then but I had never heard of it!

I quickly got into it as a spectator and so too did Marie my eldest, and fortunately for us this was also at the time when highlights of the days racing started to play on British TV and we quickly had our favourites from back then.

I do remember though that there was no mention of drugs or cheating, well certainly not that I can remember when Marie and I first became fans, but we do know now, that it was going on then, and has been almost since the tours inception.  We watched it through the 80's enthralled by the stamina of the riders, amazed at their skill and endurance as they daily crunched their way through valley and seemingly almost 'do for themselves' as they climbed mountains in the Alps and the Pyrénées. We were amazed at the crowds that watched this spectacle from the roadside, only really getting a few minutes of actual cycling, as the Peloton roared past them at speeds we thought only possible in a car and we remember Greg le Mond and his mammoth battles long before Lance Armstrong came on the scene , and we loved it.

Then along came Armstrong who quickly took over the dominance of the race from the Europeans and we started to hear, albeit before his arrival , more and more talk about drugs and cheats and liars and cheats, but it didn't matter, because to the ordinary folk like me and Marie, it didn't matter because Armstrong had beaten cancer and he was tested and tested and tested, and never found to be cheating.  Those that accused him were shot down in rebuttals or in court and some even had their lives destroyed, but it didn't matter, because he was tested and tested and tested, and declared clean.

But he wasn't clean and those that accused him, well some of them weren't clean either and were doing it to get a lesser sentence from the cycling world bodies or whoever, but Armstrong was still clean and was tested and tested and tested, and no one could say anything different.

He has made millions of dollars from being a cheat a large part of that from corporate sponsors, but make no mistake about it he has made it off the backs of the fans, the ordinary man, woman and child, who loved what he stood for.

Honesty and Integrity with a built in desire to beat all the odds whether it was, with the help of doctors and nurses and hospital ancillary staff who medicated, treated and cleaned up after him while undergoing his successful battle against cancer, or for every one of us who stood by the roadside and cheered him on or sat in our living rooms enthralled by the special qualities that this ONE individual had been gifted with. For the staff of the charity foundation he created, to the fundraisers raising money for that charity; he cheated us all and he cheated his family too.

And now a confession, no it's not that I am a cheat and am now going to suddenly own up to it on the pages of this blog, if anything I am far to honest, sometimes for my own good.  If I have done something in the past that was going to have consequences or cause an adverse reaction I have always come clean about it.  The checkout operator making a massive mistake, and I do mean massive, in my favour and as I quizzically look at the receipt as I walk away and I know I really need the money, I take it back and point out the mistake.  I find £100 on the side walk as I walk into another supermarket, again at a point in our lives where we are just about scraping bye and that £100 would make a massive difference to us that month, I hand it in to customer services.

No, my confession and question to myself is this;

Why is it that I despise Lance Armstrong for what he has done and think he should be banned for life and not allowed to take part in competitive sport, with the same intensity as I despise Dwain Chambers, a British Athlete who also cheated and begged forgiveness and to be allowed back in to The British Olympic team and then when he wasn't getting anywhere with his requests, took them to court?  But for some reason I do not have the same strong feelings towards David Millar, another cyclist who served a two year ban when he was found out.

Is it, and I honestly don't know, that Millar was caught, admitted it and took his punishment without quibble and has, like the reformed smoker, become one of the sports staunchest and outspoken critics of drugs and cheating in the sport? I don't know if it's as simple as that, I really don't.

Is it that Armstrong and Chambers, and others of that ilk, were caught and continued to deny it, branding honest people liars, even after we all knew that they were the lying cheating toe rags that should be ostracised from our psyche for ever and ever for continuing to 'cheat us' whereas Millar 'manned up' and accepted his fate and his punishment without quibble? I don't know...

From what little I saw of the interviews, Armstrong came across as someone who was sorry, sorry that he was sitting there in front of Oprah and having to give a basic 'truth' about what he did, but it never felt as if he actually meant it.  It felt as if, he was an almost omnipotent creature who was about to pass through the doors in to fully deity status and he was only sorry that the door had been slammed in his face, and he hadn't made the last few steps to complete the transition into un-reversible greatness, that's what it seemed like to me, at least......

So, Oscar, you were right..... and I was wrong, but nothing new in that then is there?

People are also correct when they say, other questions need to be asked and answered and until they are he needs to be encased in Amber and forgotten about;

How and why all his tests proved negative
Who helped and assisted him in this deception and cheating both from his team and the Cycling word
Who were the Doctors
Where did the drugs come from and how were they 'couriered' about the country / world

I will continue to be a fan of the sport and hope that this really is the beginning of the end and that ALL cyclists are riding on a high of naturally produced adrenalin and nothing else from here on in, but for the cheats, please, just go away we, the fans, the organisers and the millions of kids around the world don't need you to tell them "The only way to succeed, is to cheat"

And just to prove my credentials, here are a few images taken by me involving cycling;

Mr Fat has an idea!

I was chatting with Caitlin via email the other day after being pointed in the direction of her blog, RoseRunner,  by Aunty Jules .

Anyhows, me and Caitlin got to discussing Mr Fat and she, being young, fit and healthy (we won't hold the fact that she is a lawyer against her - she does seem perfectly nice in every other respect....) and she was giving me some encouragement to keep up with my getting fit and losing weight regime  - now if I could only encourage the hundreds of folk who give me encouragement in these endeavours, to give me money instead I would be a rich guy, but hey, being friend rich is just as nice - and she suggested that Ishbel should get out there with me.....   Oh, how I laughed at that, in fact laughed so much I'm sure I must have lost a couple of pounds .....

Now Ishbel, as you all know is the other half I have had to put up with for over 37 years, give or take a millennium or two, and who is the Stan Laurel to my Oliver Hardy, the twiglet to my oak tree .... you get the picture right, I'm fat, she's skinny.

The Boss, looking FAB!
So, I mentioned this to the totally gorgeous creature who inhabits my life and after having to pat her on the back to assist her in her coughing and choking fit she says, "No more bloody emails between you and this Caitlin, if that's the type of advice she gives out, and she's a lawyer you say? Remind me never to ask her for advice should we ever be in the bay area (chance would be a fine thing). What else does she do?" she asked.  "Well., she runs, marathons." says I.  "Oh! she does, does she, well tell her.... "

Well, lets not go there shall we.  Suffice it to say, we and by we, I mean me and the kids who have all grown up now and flown the nest used to run, play, swim and cycle together when they were indeed kids. Ishbel on the other hand never learnt to swim, cycle or for that matter learn to run as a kid and still cant till this day.  " I can get enough exercise running about after you lot" is the usual riposte and let's face it while some would argue and of course that seems to be the new 'in vogue message that we are getting this last week in the news, that lack of any exercise is almost as bad for you as smoking and causes just as many deaths.. I kid you not that's what has been in the news here in the UK this week.
A lack of exercise is now causing as many deaths as smoking across the world, a study suggests.
But, Ishbel does get some exercise as, when she is not working, she gets out and about, walks to the station a mile and a half away gets a train, underground, train and heads over to visit the kids in Woking, and Northampton and Berkshire.  Not great, someone with more strength of character than I, might say to her, but hey, she looks good doesn't she and as she keeps reminding me, women in her family all live into their late ninety's - so , no time off for good behaviour for me then....

This idea I had, from today's title, you thought I had forgotten hadn't you, come on you know I ramble on, but I do get there eventually, As I was having a cycle run this morning, and today is the first day in months I have mounted my bike in anger and you will recall the last time I did this was months ago and I wrote then
So, that's what I did, I got on the bike to go to the shops this morning which are a ten minute walk or a three minute cycle.  I've discovered that if you don't cycle regularly that getting back on to it, even for a few minutes, makes you feel as if you have just taken part in a gruelling stage of the Tour De France, seriously, you start to get pains in the top of your legs caused by the unfamiliar rotational movement, your ass starts to hurt again, even although there is still plenty of cushioning there and all of this as you cycled to the end of the street, shit what's it going to be like by the time I get to the shops.......  Do I stop and walk the bike back to the house or carry on pushing those stiff pedals that seem to be in need of some oil as they really don't feel like turning after being neglected for so many months.  Persevere was the answer so off I went teetering on my way to the shops to buy some paprika, mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers and corn, for a spicy sauce I'm making later.

So off I went.  I decided to stay local and managed three circuits of of a square in the village.  Each circuit is about 1.7 -8 miles so I managed a paltry 5 miles this morning, but I really couldn't do any more as my legs were beginning to seize up and my bum was as numb as my gob after a visit to the dentist and having been given a shot! You will also know that I am a big fan of the Tour De France and as much as it pains me to say it (as I loathe and detest the company S**) - Go Wiggins, Froome and Cavendish, (who are all in the team sponsored by that appalling company).  Anyway, as those guys are peddling away hell for leather and they develop a problem, out jumps the mechanic from the following team car  and does a quick wheel, or in extreme cases, a bike change....

And my thought was, as you would have read previous posts, it's in there somewhere, I am forever getting punctures, and so with Caitlin's thought in mind, I thought I could get Ishbel up, strap a spare wheel to her back, she doesn't drive either.... and get her to jog along behind me... that way if I get a puncture, she could stagger up to the plate, hand over the new wheel, do a quick change, and I'd be on my way again.... what do you think, it has merit I think and it would kill two birds in one.  We'd both be getting fit together and still be going and doing everything together as we have been doing for the best part of the last half century!

Mr Fat gets on his Bike

You'll recall that December was a pretty quiet month for me in that I completely took the month off.

To get back on track I decided to increase my step count from 10000 steps per day to 12000 per day.  that has been going well and in fact I am averaging between 13 and 18000 steps per day.

Additionally, I have decreased my calorie intake dramatically, but, and again I am not to worried about it, although slightly frustrating, I still don't seem to be shedding the weight!

This morning I decided to get out on the bike for the first time in months.  Now I don't have a super expensive all singing all dancing road racer or even an off road bike.  No, my bike is a bog standard, less than £200.00, street bike that I bought in 2009 when I first gave up the car, with panniers so that that I could do the shopping, sad but true.....

When I bought it in 2009 and got on it for the first time, it was sheer hell, I was so fat and so unfit I was in agony.  I couldn't even swing my leg over the cross bar to mount it. I had to lower the bike down to one side to allow me to get my 'leg over' as it were! But I persevered and enjoyed it.  After a while the sore legs and the very sore ass got less sore, and I always wondered how an ass my size, with so much cushioning, could hurt so much!

Anyway, I haven't been on the bike for a few months as, concentrating more on the steps as I think unless you are cycling for a couple of hours and a lot of miles, you get more benefit from a brisk walk, than you do from a cycle to the shops and back.

It was only when I got home later, that I realised and remembered that there are 27 gears on my old bike and guess why the pedals were so hard to turn............ yeah Mr Fat Numpty had them on the lowest gear or is it the highest, I never know which is which, anyway the one that makes it harder to pedal, but I suppose in a way that's better for me, right, so my stupidity is actually helping my fitness....

I think the answer may be that as I am managing to get my steps in from my morning walk and then by getting away from my desk while at work, that as the lighter evenings are starting to come in, instead of going for another walk, would be to get out on my bike for an hour or so as well and then get the benefit of the steps and the cycle each day.... I'll let you know how that goes
