This morning I awoke to a tweet from a friend asking me, "Is that the tune from Oliver?"
I did think that Ian had sent me a question that he had intended for someone else, but no, it was for me as the 'conversation' on twitter appeared and 'I' had tweeted twice, earlier this morning, that I 'liked' two particular songs on iTunes.
Now I do have an iTunes account and recently I clicked on the 'ping' mode to tweet about a song that I had listened to and did personally want to share....
Now we have all seen the apps where we have to click to authorise on Twitter and it does say that they can post tweets for you and I have to say that I am fairly uncomfortable with that, and normally then click cancel, If I have something to say, I'll say it, and I certainly don't want anyone or indeed any organisation large or small saying things that I may not agree with, in my name without me knowing. And, I wouldn't know, as it is very rare for me to click on 'my' tweets to check what I have said previously. And so, if Ian hadn't asked me the question, I would have been oblivious to 'my tweets'.
Now it may seem like a small insignificant thing to be getting my knickers in a twist over, after all, they have only said that, 'I liked a couple of tunes' and even although I had never heard these I probably would like them, but they are not in my collection and I have never listened to them on iTunes either fully or in review.
So, they made an assumption and they lied. It may only be a small, white lie, but they lied....
Now, what if iTunes and Apple suddenly started tweeting in my name about other things;
Tom Stronach prefers reading books purchased from iTunes to Amazon
Tom Stronach doesn't believe that the US case against APPLE and Book Publishers in relation to book price fixing is warranted
You see where this is going, Apple and others whom you allow to tweet in your name could basically tweet anything they wanted, all in your name........
Oh, and I prefer, at the moment Amazon and Kindle and have never purchased a book from iTunes, and on the other, if they have and are found guilty, the law, hopefully will sort it out..
But the message to iTunes and Apple and any other App creator out there is:
DON'T USE MY NAME TO PROMOTE YOUR SALES /CAUSE OR COMPANY
By the way, the one singer I did tweet about through iTunes was the utterly gorgeous velvet voiced Jazz Songstress:
Georgia Mancio you can visit her web site here and have a taste
Mr Angry has every right to be cross, epsecially on a sunday morning! So whats the next move? how does one stop this sort of stuff which I agree is wrong!
ReplyDeleteThat's easy, permission for the iTunes App to access my Twitter account has been revoked. Just be careful what apps you are authorising and why and if you think they overstep the line revoke them.
ReplyDeleteBut it's the same with phone apps and this is wyh I don't have that many on my phone. They want accesas to your address book, memory, SD card and to be able to delete stuff (if their app is getting to big and you are running out of memory) they want to be able to delete stuff to make room, not on my bloody phone .....
You're kidding? I don't give anything permission to tweet for me. Yuck! I would feel so violated.
ReplyDeleteWhat if something automatically tweeted Tom reads 50 shades or something???
Just pushing your buttons, Steph!
Hi Jules, Neither do I, and as I said in my previous response, normally when I click on something that that wants permission to do this I always click on 'cancel' I can't recall actually seeing the iTunes App asking for that permission, So it did piss me off.
ReplyDeleteTwo months ago I would has asked if you were kidding about this, but not now. I was editing a three-sisters-one-mom memoir that was an excellent blend of questions asked by the mother, answered honestly, humorously and poignantly by her daughters. Somewhere along the way, the mother somehow connected with an online publication and without realizing it she gave permission to use her name and website. It was a mess. Now it's cleared up, but it took the happy buzz off the project. There are a lot of things out there that can trip you up.
ReplyDeleteMarylin, I have one of those smart phone thingys that I hardly use and I noticed on there with the apps that almost without exception all apps require permission to modify your memory and or delete stuff and access to your address book! Why do they need that? Simple answer is, they dont! I am convinced they are using this information for marketing re address books and as I said allows them to delete other stuff to make room for their app as It grows in size.
ReplyDeleteGet rid, is the Answer
Hey! Thought I'd point out another possibility which I've seen more of lately.
ReplyDeleteIt's possible somebody grabbed your account information and logged in with it.
No joke. I had someone hack into my eMail account and send a bunch of friends a link to a sales site about... male enhancement!
Quite embarrassing, haha. Anyway, my advice is to change up your password just in case. :)
Hi Kirkus, yep, thought about having been hacked, but no. definitely Apple and itunes being arseholes on this occasion

Love the usage of the word "arsehole." LOL! I have a another buddy from Scotland who uses it on a regular basis. Makes me laugh every time!
